Hello Showdlers, As you may or may not know, it's America's Independence Day!
It also just so happens to be America's 250th birthday.
Soooooooo.. In celebration, I have decided to compile a list of five American-made shows that have truly changed the landscape of Television forever.
First show is just below, here we go.
1. I Love Lucy (1951)
You might know this show. It's the black and white one with the woman named Lucy. This show was HUGE because it had a couple of firsts for the television industry.
- First show to have a 3 camera setup with a live audience
- First show to have 'flat' and even overhead lighting
- First show that could be rerun basically endlessly forever as a result of being shot on pristine film.
- Paved the way for Syndication, allowing it to be aired on other networks.
So yeah, I Love Lucy was huge for the television industry. But it's not the only show that made TV what it is today.
2. Star Trek: The Original Series (1966)
This show had boldly gone where no TV show had gone before. The places it went? well beam on down (or just scroll down lol) to the list to find out.
- First show to be rescued by fans. It was going to be cancelled, but after fans started a letter-writing campaign, it got un-cancelled. For the people. If that's not American, I don't know what is.
- First show to have a diverse cast to the point it did.
- First major primetime show to feature a scripted, romantic interracial kiss (Kirk and Uhura made absolute history here).
Star Trek proved that TV fans have real power. But what about animation? See the next show.
3. The Simpsons (1989)
Before this show came along, cartoons were basically just seen as cheap entertainment to keep kids quiet on Saturday mornings. The Simpsons broke that forever. It showed that cartoons can be for anybody. As usual, this show's firsts list is below.
- Shattered the (in my opinion dumb) "cartoons are only for kids" stereotype by dominating primetime TV.
- Pioneered the entire modern adult animation genre. Think Family guy would've existed without the Simpsons? Nope, very likely not.
The Simpsons proved animation could rule primetime. Now let's go back to live action for one of the most well-known shows in the entire world.
4. Friends (1994)
You definitely know this one. Six friends, one coffee shop, and an endless amount of drama. It sounds simple (if i was hearing this description for the first time, i would think that the show would likely flop tbh), but it became one of America's biggest cultural exports of all time. As usual, the list is below:
- Became a massive global tool for teaching conversational English and American slang to international audiences.
- Shifted sitcoms away from a single "main character with a family" to a perfectly balanced equal ensemble cast.
- Permanently changed the financial scale for TV actors when the cast negotiated together for historic million-dollar-per-episode salaries.
Friends ruled the 90s and 2000s broadcast world. But our last show completely changed how we handle comedy in the modern workspace.
5. The Office (2005)
Dunder Mifflin completely killed the traditional studio laugh track and changed how an entire generation views their 9-to-5 job. It traded safe jokes for pure awkwardness.
- Popularized the single-camera "mockumentary" format in America, replacing laugh tracks with deadpan silences and glances at the camera.
- Mainstreamed "cringe comedy" on network television, making social discomfort hilarious.
- Became the ultimate king of the streaming era, proving a show could get even bigger as endless background noise on digital platforms long after its original broadcast ended.
NO GOD PLEASE NO! NOO! NOO! NOOOOOOOOO!
